Floor Is Lava Story Mode Walkthrough: How to Beat Volcano Chronicles

Story Mode โ€” the Volcano Chronicles campaign โ€” is 51 episodes set on real volcanoes. Each episode is really three mini-games stitched together: a parachute drop into the crater, a vertical climb to the top, and (on some episodes) a horizontal cavern crossing along the way. This walkthrough is written from an actual play-through โ€” what each phase throws at you, what every power-up is for, how the Scorcha boss fights work, and the hints that make the long episodes survivable.

The controls (learn these first)

The whole game runs on three inputs, plus number keys for your power-ups:

Phase 1 โ€” the parachute drop

Every episode opens with a top-down fall into the volcano. You start with five hearts, and the banner tells you the job: "Steer to dodge โ€” rocks, bats, embers & steam!" Debris drifts up toward you and each hit costs a heart. This phase is short but it is the easiest place to needlessly bleed hearts, and those hearts carry into the climb.

Phase 2 โ€” the climb (the heart of the game)

After the drop you land on the first platform and the real game begins: climb upward, platform by platform, while lava rises from below. The HUD shows your progress as platforms climbed / target (for example 38 / 78). Reach the target number and you escape the volcano, rescue the treasure, and unlock the next episode.

The target is not arbitrary โ€” it is the volcano's real elevation in metres, converted to a platform count. Krakatoa (157 m) asks for 78 platforms; Taal (311 m) asks for 155; Santorini for 183; Campi Flegrei for 229. Taller volcano, longer climb. Later episodes become genuine marathons, so pace and power-up management matter more the deeper you go.

Know your platforms

Platforms come in several flavours, and half of climbing well is choosing the right one to aim for:

Watch for environmental events too โ€” for example "Stalagmite hits lava! Lava slows," which temporarily eases the pressure from below.

The golden rule: stay ahead of the lava

You lose a run one of two ways: dropping to zero hearts, or letting the lava catch you. On calm episodes the climb outruns the lava easily. On boss episodes โ€” where you're constantly being knocked around โ€” the lava is the thing that actually kills you. If you can see the lava line creeping up close beneath your feet, stop optimising for coins and start climbing for your life (see Lava Ship, below).

Phase 3 โ€” caverns (horizontal sections)

Partway up some episodes the climb hits a roof: you can't go straight up any more, and there's an opening in one side wall. This is the entry to a cavern, a horizontal platformer section. Instead of jumping up into the roof, steer to the opening and drop into it. The camera pans sideways and now you travel left-to-right (or right-to-left), hopping across a run of platforms to the far exit, which drops you back into the vertical climb where you left off.

The torch and night mode

A torch meter (๐Ÿ”ฆ, shown as a percentage) slowly drains as you play โ€” it's a long, session-wide burn rather than a per-episode timer. When it hits 0% the game switches to night mode: platforms go dark and only reveal themselves as you get near, which makes the climb far harder. The fix is the Torch Battery power-up (key 6), which refills the torch to 100%. Buy one before the torch dies rather than climbing blind โ€” the game will even prompt you when it runs low.

The six power-ups โ€” and when to actually use them

You buy power-ups in the Shop (or via the quick-buy prompt that pops up mid-run when a slot is empty), then fire them with the number keys. Each stacks up to 20 uses. Spending coins here is what gets you through the long, late-campaign episodes, so don't hoard them all the way to the end.

Boss fights: Scorcha the Volcanic Saboteur

Roughly 31 of the 51 episodes are boss episodes. Scorcha drops in from above, lands on a platform ahead of you, and roams the climb sabotaging platforms. She has five powers, and the campaign hands them to her gradually โ€” one at a time early on, then in combination, up to all five at once in the final episode:

Two things to remember on boss episodes: you can bump into Scorcha to drive her off (she flees and returns later), and surviving a boss episode pays a +50 coin bonus. Because she constantly interrupts your rhythm, the lava creeps closer than usual โ€” this is exactly when the Lava Ship earns its keep.

How an episode ends, and how the campaign flows

Hit the platform target and you get a "VOLCANO ESCAPED!" summary โ€” platforms climbed, coins earned, a story bonus, and the next volcano unlocked โ€” then a short escape cut-scene and back to the world map for the next episode. Episodes unlock strictly in order, so you can't skip ahead. Finishing all 51 assembles every rescued treasure into a ship and permanently unlocks Lava Ship (Space Mode).

A real play-through log

Here's how the opening episodes actually played out, to give you a feel for the difficulty curve and timing:

The pattern is clear: length scales with the volcano's real elevation, boss episodes roughly every other episode early on and then more often, and the combination of a long climb + boss + cavern is what turns a casual run into a test. Budget your coins so you reach the late episodes with a stock of Lava Ships and Jump Boosts.
