Floor Is Lava Story Mode: Volcano Chronicles
Volcano Chronicles is the story campaign — 51 episodes set on real-world volcanoes, each with its own real elevation, a treasure to rescue, and a hint pointing you to the next location.
What it does
Every episode follows the same structure: a real volcano (with its real name, location, and elevation in meters), a climbing target based on that elevation, a piece of lost treasure to recover, and a short story hint connecting it to the next volcano on the list. The first episode is Krakatoa (Anak Krakatau) in Indonesia at 157m, which sets a target of 78 platforms — the game turns each volcano's real elevation into a platform count for that episode. Later episodes include locations like Taal Volcano in the Philippines (311m, 155 platforms) and Santorini Caldera, all the way to the 51st and final episode.
Finishing all 51 episodes triggers an ending cutscene where every treasure you've rescued is assembled into a ship — which is what unlocks Lava Ship (Space Mode).
Scorcha, the recurring boss
Story mode has a recurring boss, Scorcha the Volcanic Saboteur, who drops into select episodes throughout the campaign — roughly every other episode at first, then every episode near the end, for 31 boss episodes total out of the 51. She falls in from above, lands on a platform ahead of you, and roams the climb using aggressive platforming AI while turning platforms against you.
Scorcha has five powers, and the campaign unlocks them gradually — early boss episodes give her one power at a time, and later ones combine several at once, up to all five together in the final episode:
- Tip — tips a platform near you (like the environmental Tipping hazard, but softer).
- Crumble — turns a nearby platform into a crumbling one.
- Stickify — turns a nearby platform sticky.
- Net throw — throws a net that can briefly ensnare you if it lands on you.
- Boulder — hops in place, dislodging a falling boulder each hop that you need to dodge (up to 6 boulders before she retreats).
You can drive Scorcha off early by bumping into her — she flees and comes back later in the same episode. If she's about to land right on top of your current platform, a temporary safety platform appears underneath her so her landing can't sandbag you. Surviving a boss episode adds a +50 coin bonus to that episode's completion reward, on top of the usual per-platform and per-cavern bonuses.
How to play it
- Open Story from the bottom nav bar to see the Volcano Chronicles episode map.
- Pick the next unlocked episode and tap Start Rescue.
- Climb to that volcano's platform target — set by its real elevation — to rescue its treasure and unlock the next episode.
- On boss episodes, watch for Scorcha dropping in — bump into her to drive her off if she's causing trouble with a platform hazard or her net.
- Repeat through all 51 episodes to complete Volcano Chronicles and unlock Lava Ship.
Tips
- An episode's platform target is just its real-world elevation in meters, so taller volcanoes mean longer climbs — plan accordingly if you're picking a quick episode to finish.
- Episodes unlock in order, so you can't skip ahead to a favorite volcano — work through the map in sequence.
- Finishing all 51 episodes is the only way to unlock Lava Ship, so if you want that mode, Volcano Chronicles is the path there.
- Boss episodes get harder as the campaign goes on — Scorcha starts with one power at a time and ends the final episode using all five at once, so save your power-ups for late-campaign boss episodes if you're stockpiling any.
- Surviving a boss episode is worth an extra 50 coins, so it's worth playing a little more carefully when you know Scorcha is due to appear.
